‘Employee of the Month’

Jun 27, 2013

Just wanted to say, that the employee of the month has to go to Diane! She is truly amazing! I would say that (through no fault of my own) I have been a nightmare over the last few weeks and she has always been so calm and helpful – to the point of sourcing fabrics and solutions. She is always so cheerful (and patient) on the end of the phone. Thank you so much Diane! You are a star!

Finding Customers for Your Blinds Business

To get your first customers the simplest way is to let your friends and family know what you are doing and see if they are interested in blinds at the moment. Next would be to get some leaflets printed up either locally or on the internet and distribute them yourself to save money and make sure they are delivered. It’s best to have a local land line phone number on the leaflets and if you aren’t able to have the phone manned divert it to your mobile.

Newspaper advertising should also be used along with Yellow Pages which while not as popular as they were can still be a source of steady leads. Leaflets however are one of the quickest way to be up and running.

Another way would be if you have a website, use Google’s Pay per Click, where you can advertise and you only pay when someone clicks through to your website. Also if you have a website put it on Google local, it’s free.

For newspaper advertising black writing on a yellow background is the combination which gets attention. Start of testing with small adds and if successful roll them out.

You will be better off not joining the blind companies who sell only on price i.e. 3 for 99 pound.

Sell on quality and a 6 year warranty on vertical and roller blinds.

At this stage it is assumed you have a car or van. (Makes it a lot easier than using public transport) You will also need a toolbox and tools.

The tools required include tape measure, hammer drill, screwdrivers, junior hacksaw and screws and plugs.

You can do some networking, for example go round Show Houses on new build sites and leave some of your leaflets and business cards with the people on site, or go to see people who are running carpet and curtain shops. There are many business’s which could put business your way if approached in the right way.

Many people will be glad to introduce their customers to you as a favour and you would obviously reciprocate telling your customers, when you have them, about their curtains, carpets or whatever.

Alternatively you could pay your introducers a small percentage of the sale or, better still give them blinds at special discount price.

These ideas should get your blinds business up and running

Preparing to start a blinds business

Do you want to start your own blind business? Are you working as an agent with the company getting the Lions share, when you could do the same work for yourself and make a lot more?

Do you want to start it as a standalone business, or add it to an existing business? In these times of austerity it makes sense to have another income stream.

Maybe you already run a blind business but want to run it more successfully, or are an agent for one of the national companies and want a bigger share of the profit for your hard work and expertise. Or are you thinking of adding blinds to a current business?

A list of some of the types of business which would be a good match for window blinds would include:

Conservatories

Double Glazing

Carpets/Flooring

Curtains

Letting Agencies

Interior Designers

Decorators

Builders

Market Traders

Window Cleaners

Furniture Store

Architects

These would also be the sort of business to network with as they would make good introducers and would be able to put business your way, along with new build Show Homes, if you know of any other business that fits well with blinds please let me know and I will include it in any future Editions.

If you are adding blinds to an existing business you can still use your current business name and you will have customers on your data base who can be contacted right away to inform them you are now in the window blinds business as well, which should get you off to a flying start.

If on the other hand you are starting the business from scratch there are some things you need to do.

You will need to open a bank account in your business name to enable you to bank your money.

Please note that this article does not deal with the legal matters of running a window blind or any other type of business and you should look up the legal aspects in your own country.

First of all you will need some samples to show your potential customers and the best place to get these in the UK are at www.BlindsTrade.com the site you are on at the moment we will send you free samples of vertical and roller fabrics all with a six year Free warranty.

You should also purchase for five pound each, swatches of venetian blinds and wood Venetian, the cost will be refunded on the first orders of said blinds.

Vertical ,roller and venetian blinds of both types aluminum and wood are the easiest to deal with and a good place to start, you can then move on to the other types of blinds, Roman, pleated etc, and possibly later Plantation Shutters.

You will need to organize your stationary and marketing literature, so you will have to choose a company name. Choose a name with “blinds” in it and also use the name in a website domain.
The preparation for starting your business is now done.

Five mistakes to avoid when starting your own blinds business

April 27, 2013

There are many mistakes you can make when starting up or running a window blinds business, here are just 5 of them.

(1) Unsuccessful advertising.

Only advertise when you can check the results. You must test your advertising and monitor the results. Try out small adds first and if successful roll them out. Always ask the customer where they saw your advert, or how they came to hear about you. If any advert isn’t working cut it.

(2) Poor click through rate to your website.

You may have a beautiful website, all bells and whistles but if nobody knows about it and you aren’t getting the visitors you are wasting your time and money.

There are many ways to promote your website including, SEO, PPC, Articles, videos, email campaigns and links, to mention just a few. All of these can be outsourced for very little money and will save you a lot of time.

(3) Joining the 5 for 99pound  brigade.

Lots of companies sell blinds this way where the only thing they sell on is price. Leave this lot to their price and quality cutting war. Be different, use only quality trade blinds products. Give a better warranty, give good service and you will thrive as they fall by the wayside.

(4) Sell it and forget it. part 1

About the biggest mistake you can make is to sell to a customer and think that is the end of it. The easiest customer to sell to is one who has already bought from you. Build up Data bases of your customers, Dymo for address’s and Mailchimp for emails and keep in contact on a regular basis by, email. Telephone them for the more personal touch. Make your customers, customers for life.

(5) Sell it and forget. part 2

When you have fitted the blinds and the customer is happy, ask them to fill in a testimonial form saying how happy they are, and ask who they know who would be happy with the same good trade blinds and service. You can use the testimonials on your marketing literature and of course your website.

These have been just 5 of the mistakes to avoid, Good Luck in your venture into the window blinds business.
